An iOS device is backed up when syncing to iTunes; any other iPod is just mobile storage for what's in your iTunes library, I see no reason why you should need to back it up.

Why not do the sensible thing and keep your iTunes library secure? Dump your library on an external drive or burn the mp3/aac files to DVDs as a backup.
