The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office yesterday published a remarkable volume of new Apple patent applications, offering another look at technologies the company has at least been thinking about, even if they may never see the light of day. Here are a couple of the interesting ones that made their appearances yesterday.

One patent application detailed by Patently Apple describes a concept for bringing a "Spaces" style workspace switcher to the iPad. While the interface is extremely similar to that found in Mac OS X and in fact uses Mac OS X running on a tablet-style device in image exhibits within the application, it does reveal that the company has considered how such a system could be implemented on a multi-touch device.

According to descriptions within the patent application, Apple envisioned invoking Spaces on an iPad-like device with either a two-finger pinching gesture in a specific location or by using a five-finger tapping or pinching gesture. Various interactions be used to either switch directly between workspaces or to display a graphical representation of all workspaces for selection or to drag windows between workspaces.

As noted by AppleInsider, a second patent application discusses the potential for including multiple cameras on the iPhone to enable users to take three-dimensional photos. In particular, Apple discusses hardware methods of employing three sensors to pick up different information about a scene, including individual sensors for luminance (brightness) and chrominance (color) with a third sensor to provide alignment information for constructing a three-dimensional image rather than relying on software extrapolation for such purposes. Apple argues that the system would produce higher-quality images and reduce processor load for creation of three-dimensional images.

That is all we need people demanding that their phone take 3d pictures or it sucks.

Doont give a crap about 3d but spaces will be a welcome addition to iOS. Cant imagine using my 13 inch MacBook if it didnt have spaces and exposé.

This sounds like an April Fools joke to me. lol
Doesnt really sound like a prank to me.

3D photos are interesting just for the fact it shows Apple is/has been thinking about making 3D displays for their products. An iPhone with a 3D screen could be very cool for any number of applications and games.

Ah yes, similar to all of those "same as that but on a computer..." and "same as that but on the Internet...", queue the never-ending list of new patents of the form:

1. take something that has been available on a computer for decades
2. file for a patent with the only difference being "on a tablet"

For me its the opposite ... I think a 3D camera could be fun (but if I have the choice, I would rather have a higher quality one that is more comparable to compact cameras) ... Spaces seems to me pointless - with the new four finger gestures enabled on the iPad I can easily switch between apps (through the task bar at bottom and directly between them) and I would not know what advantage spaces would have since apps are always fullscreen.

The iPhone 5 & iPad 3 will both display in 3D without glasses and take 3D photos just like the Nintendo 3DS. Portable 3D is one of the few mass market 'wow' features that the competition could use to compete with and/or overtake the iPhone / iPad.

Nintendo has proven it's possible, Apple will improve upon and perfect it.

Spaces would be a great iPad feature if they add widgets... hint.. hint..

Lotta processor power. Not for a while coming, I'd think, but all excellent.

Please, virtual desktops were available in 80s, on computers with exponentially less processing power than even 10 year old cellphones.

If Apple can't make this work on A4 or A5 chips, there's a bloat problem somewhere.

I'm guessing they are featuring something similar to what was shown on the Blackberry playbook, long before the iPad 2 was released, I remember Blackberry showing mult-touch gestures being used to multi-task..

I'd really like to see 3D on an iPhone or iPad..

I love the iOS developer app-switching gestures, and I hope Apple does something with them. But I can see how they might interfere with apps. I thought this commentary (via Daring Fireball) had an even better idea:

The idea there I really liked is holding the home button while doing those gestures (at least as the default option). That way apps (like Garageband and 2-player-1-screen games) still have full access to 4+ fingers, until you hold Home. You can have your gestures and eat them too... or... something.

As much as I love gimmicky stuff like 3d screens (and I do like movies in 3d), I tried playing with a 3ds the other day. I had to adjust it to very little depth though cause it hurt my eyes (I could feel them straining even looking at it).

So while part of me goes, "That would be neat to have a 3d screen and to be able to take 3d photos." part of me also knows I might find that for me I can't enjoy it cause it just seems to strain my eyes :(.

Also, it just seems the 3d photo thing seems a little too much like it could be an April Fool's joke.

I don't mind going to the theater and seeing a 3D movie, but I do not want it in my gadgets.

Why would that be an April fools joke? The 3DS already takes 3D photos.

Forget Spaces, what's really needed is multiple user accounts. Lock screen would show a list of users, tap on the one you want to use, or it would by default log into the last one used. Settings and data would wirelessly sync between devices (like Mobile Me or iBooks bookmarks) I know a lot of people think these are personal devices and it's not needed, but it will be needed and if Apple doesn't do it, Android will soon. I don't want to have to say "Hey honey, have you seen my iPad?". I want to just pick up the closest one and have all my stuff there.

I don't think it sounds like an april fools joke cause it doesn't sound doable...

Just that Apple would be putting that in their iphone (particularly the 5. I'd be very shocked if Apple did anything 3d in the 5. Maybe later if 3d takes off and gets a reputation of being more than a gimmick).

It just seems 3d is a gimmicky thing that I could see marketing for a gaming machine but not something you are marketing more for a personal device for everything from gaming to productivity to social networking (It seems they'd want it to be taken more seriously and putting 3d on it would be hard to market the iphone to a more serious crowd as it comes off gimicky).

Strange, as Apple seems to not like 2-dimentional spaces, since in Lion they have been arranged linearly instead of in a grid like in previous OS X versions, even though there is no advantage whatsoever to Lion's linear arrangement.

Also, Apple seems to be moving away from a window system, and moving towards full-screen applications more, which would once again seem strange on an iPad with limited screen space (at least from Apple). So far the iPad is a "one thing at a time" device, even if it can sort of multitask, you can't drag files from one app to the other, or view two webpages side by side, or type a review while reading a web page.

I'd like a window system on the iPad, and I would love the 2D arrangement of Spaces. I'm just worried that Apple would not actually do this based on what I've seen in Lion so far.
