How's the download reliability? I've got Limewire and Kazaa on my PC and I haven't been able to download sh*t on Limewire. Kazaa's OK, but it doesn't have as wide variety of music I like. (I miss Audiogalaxy so much. 🙁)
It's great for music videos and episodes of Farscape I've missed though. 🙂

I haven't even been able to connect on Limewire, the last couple times I tried. I had version 2.4.x and downloaded 2.5.5, and haven't been able to connect with either version since.
Acquisition works fine. In due time I may check out iSwipe, but not until I feel it's necessary.

I didn't realize that so many people on Macs are looking for an alternative to file sharing. I guess those security chips for upcoming PCs are doing the trick. 😛

I downloaded Miscrosoft's WMP9 bete a few days ago cuz it had some new features and such but I didn't read the well-hidden fine print that pretty much said you couldn't uninstall it and that it may allow M$ to hack into your computer and activate the DRM without your concent so I immediately downloaded Winamp and am now waiting for WMP9 ful so I can install, then uninstall it (hopefully 🙁) and this is just the beginning. I'm going to switch way before Pallidinium hits the shelves. For those people that think you hate PCs now, just wait a couple years.
I searched for a simple song, it found none of them on the kazza server, it only found em them on openap

im still looking for something that has even half the content that audiogalaxy did. there was no substitute for their classical/opera content.

This program is weak, about one tenth of the songs from OpenNap download. Only Fasttrack files go quick but not enough selection especially for a person like me who has a wide variety of tastes, if they could only have more files!

Does anyone know where I can find a P2P network that has a good selection of Rap MP3's?? Help us Mac's have no more MP3 resources!!!

almost all p2p apps suck. kazaa sucks, morpheus sucks, napster sucked, limewire sucks. they all freakin suck. anyone who says kazaa is a great program is just a lamer anyways. im sorry to be so blunt but it is the truth.
i want quality downloads, with files named in some sort of non-idiotic or disorganized manner. the network needs to be streamlined and efficient, and not some supersaturating bandwidth hog.
i want quality software, without all the bloat of gator and other spyware. it needs to be fast, efficient, and intuitive. audigalaxy was, acquisition is. its just too bad acquisition still has to drop onto the gnutella network for its functionailty. there are too many lamers out there with a bunch of crap files they think is funny to send to people.
ill stick to newsgroups and ftps if the p2p networks continue to be so crappy. newsgroups continue to be one of the best resources for people looking to file share. music is high quality, named properly, and anyone with highspeed access (esp cable) will get speeds on average of 300KB/sec.

I agree 100%. I can't stand the quality of music available on p2p. I use newsgroups exclusively and get very high quality files very quickly. Granted, I may have to request something or fill somebody's request before I get my songs, but the quality more than makes up for it. It also makes it into a community and not a free for all.

Can someone fill me in a little more about these 'newsgroups'. What are they, where are they, and how do they work? I've never tried dowloading songs from anywhere other then P2P networks. Can I get good quality songs?

Most isp's supply you with one, but if you are really interested in getting files off the newsgroups you need to pay for a newsgroup server service. There are many of these around the net. Usually they cost $10-30 a month, the price will correspoond with download limits and server quality (ie: retention times for articles.. which means how long they are hosted on the server). If you purchase a service newsgroups can be very usefull for getting large files such as programs and movies. Music does exist on newsgroups, but its really more work downloading music from a newsgroups than a p2p like limewire. This is because there is no simple search button for newsgroups, to find what you want you must browse through several groups and lists of files. And the price of a good server is kind of expensive. I use the pro version of limewire.. and it gets everything I can find on the newsgroups. I really don;t know why so many put down limewire.. it is gnutella and has tons of files.. I've downloaded files like final cut pro 3.. adobe photoshop 7 and tons of other stuff at like 200k/s. (For backup purposes of course).

i use thoth as a news reader, and once its configured correctly, its great. ive heard halime works well too, but it was a little buggy when i tried it.
i have found that my ISP (rr.com) provides a great newsgroup facility, and all the important groups to me are there. basically that means all the binary groups that arent like child porn and such. also, its on the rr backbone so i get whatever my cable modem can handle as a download speed.

sparkleytone: i've found that xnap will sometimes have a decent classical selection (depending on the performer/comoser, you'll have better luck with bach than villa-lobos). but unlike a lot of the pop garbage, i've found that if there is a public library near by, they often have large sections of classical cds which can be checked out (and perhaps copied to the hard drive for evaluation purposes, if you are so inclined 😉 ).

yeah im blessed with an amazing music library at school, but there are alot of things its just hard to find a good recording of. when the music library would fail, audiogalaxy pretty much always picked up the slack. now i just stick to newsgroups and just collect collect collect.
