"sister" layers in Illustrator CS5?

It is getting very annoying that when I duplicate a layer and drag it to another "parent" layer, anything I use in the new "parent/sister" opens its spot of origin (which is usually dozens of layers up!). Not sure if I have the jargon right here but you probably get the idea.

Also when I leave all the "master" layers closed at night and come back and reopen the file the next day, EVERYTHING (almost) opens. Is there a pref. for this somewhere?
