iPhoto mystery - 'photos downloaded from published albums can't be used in projects'

Has anyone come across this error message before? Pretty cryptic - the photos have been 'downloaded' and are in Events but somehow aren't in my Library...? It happens when I try to select a year's worth of events, so I don't want to go through them one by one to discover which is causing the problem. Thanks for any help...
