Hey guys, im buying an ibook which i believe is a 700 or 900mhz G3, with a combo drive(cd burner/dvd reader), 40gb hard drive, 256 of ram i think and it has supposedly has 8 months of use on it for $650, do you guys think this is a good deal?

both of you have some really good valid points but the thing is that im getting it from my cousin who pretty much is letting me payhim in increments, i already have a dual 800 but my bro is taking it with him when he moves out, so this is just for the mean time, while i save up a imac G5 or powermac.

If thats the case why don't you just save your money and live without the laptop for a another month or two and buy a new laptop a head of schedule.

Example:
Buy Cousins G3 iBook for $600
Month 1: 200
Month 2: 200
Month 3: 200
Month 4: Save up for new +200 = 200
Month 5: Save up for new +200 = 400
Month 6: Save up for new +200 = 600
Month 7: Save up for new +200 = 800
Month 8: Save up for new +200 = 1000

When if you do without for a little while and start saving you can get a new machine in 1 or two months. You could even work a deal with your CC companies for some 0% intrest for 12 months and pay it off that way.

Don't buy it. First off, it is more than 8 months old. G4 iBooks have been around for about 1.5 years. Get a new 12" iBook when Tiger comes out. I bought mine from bestbuy.com with 2 years no interest. If you need to save money, look into getting a mac mini.

I agree. The G3's aren't bad machines, but the G4's are so much more rugged. Plus, the G4 will handle Tiger better than a G3 would.

Plus the G4's don't suffer from nearly as many Logic Board meltdowns.

And THAT is a hassle, even if it is repaired for free. Fortunately, my old G3 only had that problem once, and it was lost by DHL. So, I got it replaced with a G4. 🙂

I work at a highschool where we own about 100 G3 iBooks (700mhz-900mhz). Lets just say as one of the IT techs it is almost my full time job calling Apple to get them fixed. 3rd times the charm and then its time to get them replaced.

Thanks to everybody who helped me out with this, i ended up telling me cousin to sell it to some one else, and i think my self too now that it was a VERY wise decision.

Good choice.
