I recently purchased myself a Late 2010 Apple TV got it all setup and realized that it only outputs 720p. In this day and age I just assumed that it was going to output 1080p. Usually I'm not one to make assumptions, but I slipped up this time. Anyway the point of this post is to find out if anyone has heard anything about apple releasing a software upgrade that would allow for 1080p. I don't see why the current hardware wouldn't be able to support, so I guess it's just a matter of apple pushing out the update.

You can stream 1080 if you jailbreak your ATV and install XBMC

But personally if you wanna stream 1080 without a problem i suggest that you have a 1000mbps wired lan

I have a 300mbps WIFI lan and I still get lag when watching 1080 and sometimes 720p

What resolutions is the ATV2 capable of outputting?
At present, though the ATV2 can decode 1080p video (using Apple's private VideoToolBox API for hardware-accelerated decoding), it is limited to 720p output. The 1080p video is decoded, then down-scaled in hardware to 720p. This is low on the priority list to "fix", as it may be a Frontrow limitation or a hardware limitation (ATV 2 has limited resources, i.e. 256MB RAM, etc). To see if you can really benefit with 1080p output, please consult this chart

Gigabit ethernet won't matter... the LAN port on the AppleTV (either version) is only 10/100. There are people who have had better luck both wired and wireless (personally, I use 802.11N 5GHz).

Eventually, yes, Apple will make an Apple TV that can output 1080. Probably not for a couple years, though.

Yes the :apple:TV will support 1080p eventually, it does support it now unofficially so you could hack do it that way :)

However I'd personally of gone for the Mac Mini as it appears to be a better HTPC than the :apple:TV.

Forget about 1080p.. Let's bring gaming and more video streaming options (e.g. hulu plus) to the appletv.

Yeah, like AdrianK posted, that claim has been debunked.

However, I would say that 1080p will probably come with ATV3, when they put the A5 chip in there. My reason for thinking so? Because the iPad 2 supports outputting 1080p video to an HDTV, but the iPad never did.

It still won't output a 1080p signal
Correct, the only atv of any Gen / Mod is an atv 1 running xbmc Linux with a Broadcom Crystal HD chip, Then you actually output 1080P (note, the same setup running osx instead of linux will *not* output 1080p due to memory limitations).

I never have any problem streaming 1080p content so I'm really not concerned with lag. I would just like apple to give you the option for it in the settings panel. So if you have the TV and internet speed to support it you at least have the option. Here's a copy of a speed test I just did this morning using 802.11n wireless.
