I have several gmail account set up on my mac via mail and they all go into the mail inbox. However I have just set up a new gmail account and when I got it set up on macmail a gmail folder appeared.

So now I have folders on my mac and also on gmail. When I tried to delete it I got an imap error. Can someone tell me how to delete or disable this so the messages only come into the main folders on my mac and not the gmail one

Your new gmail account was set up as an IMAP account and the previous ones must have been set up as POP.

If you have more than one device that you read your emails on, IMAP will keep all devices synchronized (read it on one device and it will show as read on your iPhone. reply to a message on you iPhone and it will show as answered and in your sent mail folder on your Mac).

Search for the article "Gmail Bliss with IMAP" by Joe Kissel of 'Take Control' books.
