21.5 Mid 2011 - SSD in Optical Bay

I am considering replacing the super drive with an SSD drive using OWC's Data Doubler.

Does any one know if this setup will support SATA III drives. I don't want to spend extra $$$ on SATA III if it is not going to run at 6 GB.

Also with this setup can I make this the boot drive if I install the OS ? I would then use my 1 TB drive for data.

To the best of my knowledge the optical bay is only SATA II.

Apparently when the 2011 iMac first appeared only the connection to the primary hard drive was SATA III although a recent EFI update now extends SATA III to the secondary drive (if fitted) but still not to the optical drive.

However I believe that the HDDs fitted by Apple as the primary drive are only SATA II drives anyway.

I haven' seen any thread about installing an SSD in 21.5 mid 2011's. All the threads are about the 27in. I was thinking that the optical bay was the easiest way to get a user installed SSD into the 21.5in.
 
Hi, I am planning on doing this also. I have been scared off of the idea of pulling out the logic board and have decided the optical drive is much easier to replace with an SSD. I see that this thread is a few weeks old and am wondering if this procedure has had any problems?? Thanks

It was easy. It took me about 30 minutes to get it done. The only thing I am having a problem with now is the fan speed of the optical drive. It keeps running up to 3500, and I cant figure out how to slow it down.
