Must be because Italy has "a dictatorship of left-wing judges."

Who knows? Seems like a big joke to me. I'm amazed that any civilized nation could find this remotely acceptable. Our technology in this 21st century is amazing, but it hasn't got to the point yet where we can accurately predict an earthquake. Maybe in 10 years, but not yet.

This is insane. It is a quick way to kill the scientific community in the country with cap like this.

Earthquakes cannot be predicted with enough precision to reliably determine when evacuation is needed.
If you live on or near a fault, it's not a question of if, but when mother nature comes a-calling. Why should scientists be punished for an inevitibility that can't be reliably predicted?

When I first saw this idiocy, I was reminded of the wag who in the 1920s introduced a bill into the Tennessee legislature to make Pi exactly equal to 3.0000000........... for the benefit of the state's high school students. There was serious debate before somebody finally pointed out reality.
On reflection, however, I would add other, equal examples of highly-placed people who are out of touch with reality. Bernanke and QE2 come to mind. The maunderings of Paul Krugman who's right in there with Bernanke. Various elected officials and appointees at various levels and the lack of understanding of the marketplace, but you get my drift... |

This is going to thin the ranks of Italian geologists fairly quickly.

good story though http://www.snopes.com/religion/pi.asp Though it appears it actually did happen in the late 1800's in Indiana.

I'm sure there is a cure but the drug companies would lose money not having any patients to treat.
