If I'm not mistaken tethering is done by using bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Not with a cord.

When you use your iPhone as a mobile hotspot (AKA tether wirelessly through wifi to your iPad or another device) extra charges apply. Check with your provider's website to find out how much extra it will cost every month to use your iPhone as a hotspot.

or jailbreak it if and when that ever happens.
