HD is showing that I have more free space than I actually do.

It's very very weird and I've never seen it occur before. My MacBook is telling me I have a little over 400 gigs left out of my 500 gig HD, but I KNOW I have over 100 gigs of music and I have a 30 GB game as well. Anyone know what might be causing the issue and how I may be able to fix it? Getting kinda worried. Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help.
 
First of all backup all your data! Then you might and try disk utility and check for errors, it might be a damaged file system.
