Remote access to NAS from iPhone / iPad

Is there an App out there that will allow me to access my NAS (WD MyBookLive) remotely over the Internet and access the files on there i.e music

I know there are file browsers and FTP apps like iStorage but I cant seem to get them working.

Any help on setup would also be appreciated.

Cheers

there are a couple by the same company. The first is called filesconnect. You can access nas through afp, ftp, etc.... remotely. Stream media right to your ipad/iphone. They have a more expensive one called cloud connect pro that does the same but also allows you to remote desktop as well. I was looking for this kind of app for a while and it does everything i need. I no longer have to store any media on my phone or ipad. I stream it from my nas drive that is at my house. They both are great, i use cloud connect pro the most. Best app ever.

Cheers for that. I will have a look at them. Are they easy to setup?

For Filesconnect I just need to understand how I connect remotely as I have wasted money previously on apps that are meant to do it but I could never get them to work.

How will this app connect to my NAS. Do I need any specialist router or anything. The more I can understand before purchasing the better

Cheers

I use FileBrowser, which does pretty much the same thing as FilesConnect, but has been around longer and is half the price. FilesConnect does AFP protocol though, which is interesting as I thought this was not allowed under Apple policy.

Remote access is tricky as many ISPs block the ports you need to use on your router for security reasons (as well as to prevent people from running a server). You have to use DynDNS to get around that, which is a free service, but I haven't bothered setting that up yet. For local wifi NAS access, FileBrowser works like a charm.

Right ok, thanks for the info.

Sounds pretty complicated to setup lol as I say my requirement is to get access remotely for when I'm away with work etc.

I would be really gratefully for an idiots type guide to get this setup

Here's the page I used, note that it ultimately didn't work because my ISP blocks port 445. I may try mapping an alternate port that isn't filtered when I have time. Looks like that's the workaround as opposed to DYNDNS.

Looks like FilesConnect may indeed be the answer simply because most ISPs don't bother to block port 548, which is what AFP uses. But they do block port 445, so FileBrowser won't work remotely (as it uses SMB).

Great, got it working straight away.

Tested via using another Broadband connection at home (different ISP) and it connected first time

Filesconnect FTW

Is there any App out there that has a better GUI than Filesconnect but essentially does the same job but is easier to browse and play your music?
