iPod software update 2005-03-23 delivers iPod software 1.1 (for iPod with color display):

* Support for optional iPod Camera Connector for importing and viewing photos directly on iPod

* Updated slideshow transitions

Is that the only update, and the big size just because all the older iPod software versions are included...? Edit: Just ran the updater, an as I suspected, nothing new for the mini (or any other than the photos, i guess).

Yes, this update is for the iPod photo.

I really wish the iPod-camera corrector worked for all iPods. It would be great to unload and store photos on the go. I don't need to see them on the tiny iPod screen. I just want somewhere portable to store them if I'm note at home.

agreed, and hopefully this will be added at a later time to the rest of the iPod line as well, i guess they are trying to push the higher priced 'high end' iPods by making this a unique feature to them alone

Well, since the Belkin adapter works for all iPods, it would surprise me if the camera adapter didn't. Has anyone tried importing with the camera adapter?

I just ran the updater (66MB when uncompressed) on my photo, nothing noticeably different; I guess I need to get one of those photo connectors now.

Has anyone tried (can anyone try) with the Belkin adapter? Does it allow you to view photos after this update?

I can't see the iPod portion of the interface being different between the Belkin and the Camera connector.

the difference is the software, the software is programed to handle the different connections in different manners, although you *might* just might be able to trick your regualr ipod into thinking that its just the belkin attachment hooked up, but i dont think so, the Camera Connector says that i needs iPod Software 1.1 for the Color Display iPods to work

the belkin adapter works for 4G iPods

the only difference between the Apple and Belkin is that Apple's allows you to see the images on your iPod photo. Seeing as the 4G can't display photos, there is no advantage to the Apple over the Belkin.

Doesn't the iPod photo require it's own format of images? Does it make them itself in this situation? Or are they just compressed JPEGs to decrease file sizes?

So basically, does anyone know how the Photo handles this?

actually the Apple Camera Connector has a huge advantage over the belkin in two ways:

1. its smaller
2. it connects directly from the camera,not the flash card

much simpler solution, and i would rather use the apple one, and bring it on trips because it is smaller and easier then to use

i dont think anyone quite knows yet because no one has yet to get a Camera Connector, their shipping date was one to two weeks when they went up for sale not that long ago, i guess we will have to wait and see?

And every review I have seen of the Belkin device has rated the speed somewhere between glacial and slow as molasses in January. Haven't seen any reviews on the speed of the new Apple Camera Connector, but I hope it is at least USB 1.1 speed.

The "Belkin Digital Camera Link for iPod" and the "Belkin iPod Media Reader" (for iPods with a Dock Connector) both transfer photos to a regular iPod or iPod photo (not the mini or the shuffle) but only store the photos as is. They don't have the software to convert photos to the iPod-viewable format.

With Apple providing the software (at least for the iPod photo), perhaps third-party hardware will learn to use it too.

Maybe it's too much to expect, but are we talking like the Cube effect updated slideshow transitions, or like under-the-hood technical improvements to the current wipe effect? Don't have a photo so I don't really care, I'm just curious.

i did notice that, and i wouldnt be surprised it if was because a color regular iPod was in the works as well, or put on hold or who knows, but its probably a good sign of things to come, at least i hope so

And many of us are hoping the speeds will be USB 2.0, which I think it the likely scenario given that is the default transfer speed of the iPod.

What fascinates me is the quote "The iPod Camera Connector requires an iPod photo and a supported camera or media reader."

If we can get a small reader (like the 2 oz Sandisk ImageMate USB 2.0) to work, this might be the high speed holy grail for photos and the iPod.
