Mine makes a similar sound on start up. Mine is a late 2007 model I bought off a co-worker. I don't know if this is normal but he said it was not something to worry about (taken with a grain of salt).

This sound is perfectly normal for slot-loading drives. No need to worry.

I know, it is normal for start up, but I don't think it is normal that it do this sometimes five-seven times in a row when the only application running is word?
