Bachmann: Schools should teach intelligent design

Quote:
Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann explained her skepticism of evolution on Friday and said students should be taught the theory of intelligent design.
Bachmann, a congresswoman from Minnesota, also proposed a major overhaul of the nation’s education system and said state administrators should be able to decide how they spend money allocated to them by the federal government.

"I support intelligent design," Bachmann told reporters in New Orleans following her speech to the Republican Leadership Conference. "What I support is putting all science on the table and then letting students decide. I don't think it's a good idea for government to come down on one side of scientific issue or another, when there is reasonable doubt on both sides."
Intelligent design suggests that the complexity of the universe cannot be explained by evolution alone, and must also be attributed to a creator or supernatural being.
Intelligent design isn't science Bachmann, it's a religious belief. It has no purpose being taught in our science classes.

Can't say I'm honestly surprised. She is aiming for the Tea Party, and this kind of thing panders exactly to their type of thinking.

Then again, even the average American is pretty bad when it comes to science literacy. It is truly terrifying how many Americans believe ID, if for no other reason than that they can't (or won't) understand basic concepts like genetics and mutation working in tandem.

Evolution doesn't claim to explain the complexity of the universe

I am clairvoyant. Off the top of my head Bachman and your standard Tea Party Candidate will want:

1. Intelligent Design- check.
2. Christianity- official religion.
3. Government out of our lives, except in the bedroom.
4. Always on the lookout for a good war.
5. Cut social welfare, reinforce corporate welfare.
6. Always Lower taxes.
7. Complain about our spending problem, look for social programs to kill.
8. Draw a line in the sand for the military industrial complex.
9. Want to privatize and wring a profit out of as much of government as possible.

During a 2003 interview on the KKMS Christian radio program Talk The Walk, Bachmann said that evolution is a theory that has never been proven one way or the other.
You know what really pisses me off is that she claims to be a "real American" and pro-Constitution and then she just tramples on the First Amendment like this.

Scary if such mindset would make into the Oval Office. Right now its more a "funny US specific" topic with ID (though I read somewhere in UK it also starts). But once this hits the office it would impact us on a broader scale on the planet. Tolerance sounds not be part of that mindset.
For me its fine if they think what they think; its just a bit too stubborn.

I don't understand how Intelligent Design would even be covered in a science classroom. It's not like there are facts to go over supporting the theory.

Okay class today we are going to go over intelligent design: "God created everything. Make sure to study for the exam"

So it's real easy to get an "A". Of if you disagree, an "F".

Yeah, I'm not sure what an intelligence design exam would look like. Unless it was just a "Christianity" portion and the questions were pulled from the Bible, which would be outrageously unconstitutional obviously. Kind of strange a tea partier would so clearly go against the Constitution, but then again, I lost sight of what the tea party was about years ago.

1)Which of these best describe the undeniable intelligent design all around us?

A) The blind spot in the Human eye
B) The vestigial ear muscles in Humans
C) The inefficient Human DNA-replication method where worker-protein 1 writes the few beginning bits of the copy, then worker-protein 2 takes over writing the rest and then promptly destroys all the work done by protein 1 only to write the exact same thing in its place.
D) A caribbean sunset
E) All of the above

Right answer E

I read an outstanding article (no link unfortunately) on mammal brains that indicates they have developed over the millennium and carry forward outdated parts along the lines of (gasp) evolution (gasp again). Yes, God could have designed us this way, but then that would reduce God from the perfect being into something that can't make up it's mind.

Obviously this is god's test for you. God meant to make imperfections to test your faith. You receive an F and automatically burn in hell forever for doubting.

This was one of the points I would bring up when talking about ID. As well as some of the examples IntelliUser mentioned. If God did design life then 'intelligent' is not the word I would use. As a piece of slowly developing engineering over many, many years life is amazing. As something designed its rubbish and God must be a bit stupid in matters of biology and chemistry.

To say humans were intelligent designed is pretty stupid unless there were a lot of pages missing from the manual.
Wisdom teeth?
Appendix?
Tail bone?
Hair growing out of places it was never ment to?
Hair all over our faces?
Poor eye sight?
And those are just a few mistakes how about our never ending thirst for power and control of others?
Our love to create religions over anyone or anything?
Human race is a mess hence God couldnt have made us. or

We evolved from simpler forms with all these leftovers with parts no longer needed.....hmmmm

The more she panders to the über right during the primaries, the more centrist independents will shun her in the general election should she get the nomination.

Still, it's amazing that to them government isn't the solution...except to indoctrinate the youth to their ideology.

Wisdom teeth were needed in the past when we didn't have dentists and didn't take care of our teeth so they would fall out. Wisdom teeth would then come in to replace the lost teeth. It's that god hasn't gotten around to removing them from our design.
