I'm a casual developer and decided to install the GM on my Macbook Pro to do some testing and try out Lion. Ever since, I've had seemingly random kernel panics where the screen just goes completely black and the computer stops responding and I need to do a force restart. Sometimes these will happen multiple times in a row.

I'm curious if anyone else has had this problem because it is incredibly frustrating. So far, it seems to happen usually when switching windows in Skype or doing anything with the App Store.

Here is the kernel panic log:

Code:

I'm having the exact same issue and there doesn't seem to be any clear reason why.. :/

Exact same issue here.

My MBP was idle for an hr. So screen turns off. But when I tried, screen just didn't turn on. I pressed brightness button, keyboard backlight button, nothing. Shut the laptop lid and back up. Still nothing.

Had to hard reboot.

Looks like it may have been a disk error. Disk utility found an issue when using the verify function so I reboot via the CD and ran a full repair. So far it seems to be working fine (cross my fingers). Give it a try!

I've been having random kernel panics too, but for some reason only when I have over 4GB of RAM in my 2009 13" MBP.

I've tested the memory, it was fine. No kernel panics when only one stick is in (I've tried both). Also tried memory from other machines, and they've worked fine (so long as the total memory was less than 4GB).

Anyone else?

Thanks for your reply. I ran a Verify on the disk and got some issues as well. I have run a repair now so hopefully that'll fix the problem (though there's no easy way to tell, as it is seemingly random).

Let me know if you get any more panics after the repair.

That happened to me, but I just had to close my laptop lid and reopen it and it came right back on...

Just as an update - I was able to make the issue happen again by toggling between the different tabs in the App Store a couple of times, so the disk repair doesn't seem to have fixed anything.

Curiously enough, it only seems to happen when I am running off battery and not when I am plugged in to power. I initially thought that it might be due to the computer switching graphics cards when on battery, but checking my energy saver settings tells me that I have the switching turned off for battery + power, so that shouldn't be the issue.

If anyone else running the GM on a Macbook Pro could test this and tell me if it's just them, I would appreciate it :)

Same...

Same thing has been happening to me. I'm on a MBP 2.66 i7 w/ 8GB of RAM. At first I thought it was the ram and tried new ram in multiple combinations to no avail. I also thought that the issue occurred less frequently when I was connect to my external 23" display, but after reading the posts above I think its more of a power issue. It does occur much less...every couple of hours, if I have the A/C adapter connected.

When I am running on battery power I crash about every 30 minutes especially if I'm in Preview or Mail.app and click on an email with lots of graphics. I ran the early betas of Lion and had the same problem but just chalked it up to an unfound bug. I went back and did a clean install w/ SL and the Lion GM and I still have the problem....screen suddenly goes blank and I have to hold the power key for a forced restart. If I boot off of a SL volume, I do not have any crash problems. This seems to me like a big power manger bug that has slipped though...

I have the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB as well, so maybe there are some alternative NVIDIA drivers that we can try. Anyone know of any driver options for the NVIDIA cards?

Same here

Im having the same problem and its really frustrating. It all started with Developer Preview 3. Now on GM, still does it.

It seems to be the same error every time but triggered by different things. Although, i can't find any solid pattern. sometimes i get the error once a day, sometimes 5 times in one hour.

What i've noticed is: if it crashes by doing something on the appstore, right after rebooting it will crash no matter what when opening the appstore.

Sometimes happens with the appstore, but apparently there's no discrimination, can be anything.

I have a MBP 15" with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

If someone figure this out, please post it here, this is really really frustrating.

With the problems occurring on Nvidia cards, it's obviously the drivers. I don't have any issues with my 9400M on my old iMac though.

This behavior sounds exactly the same as my issues, at least I know it's not just me..

I'd agree on it being something to do with the graphics drivers, especially from the kernel panic report.

Looking on the nvidia site, this seems to be the latest drivers available for the GT330M cards, but it lists 10.6.8 as the OS so I'm guessing these were already included in an update.

Nvidia

Thanks! I'm going to try the NVIDIA drivers and may even try backing up to the previous version. Its odd, but I crash much less frequently when I am connected to my external Cinema Display. I still have the 15" LCD on, not mirrored. For some reason that makes a difference and reduces the crashing.

Apple should have caught this one long ago. Its incredible they got to GM with a problem this big.

I have the exact same issue on a MacBook Pro mid 2010 Core i7 NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB and it began 1 day before my warranty breaks, under 10.6.7. The problem continues under 10.7, especially when my external monitor is plugged in.

I'm going to try a clean install of 10.6.3 tonight.

I had the exact same thing happening to my Macbook Pro, 2010 NVidia 330M 512 Mb with 8 gigs of RAM. It started happening at 10.6.5 and never stopped.

I took it to the Apple store a couple of times and they kept telling me to reinstall the OS. That never worked and the whole computer completely crashed last week to the point that nothing worked. Apple ended up replacing the Main Logic Board, RAM and Hard Drive. I suspect there is something wrong with the NVidia chips or something because that seems to be the common thread between all of our computers.

Working under OS X 10.6.8 clean install, on my external monitor (40 inches, Full HD resolution 1080p). Nothing installed (even not Paragon NTFS), except VLC and Chrome.

Every .app on the harddrive are opened, YouTube is playing Flash, and VLC is reading a 720p movie full screen on Space 2.

The fan are noisy, but everything works fine without lagging and I didn't have the problem yet. But it's hard to activate it.

Let me install Skype and Pixelmator.

Edit : Skype and Pixelmator, with all the others apps opened. Everything is working just fine. So strangely it could be, does any of you installed Paragon NTFS 9 ? It's around its release date that I had the problem for the first time. What's more, I had it under HDD Lion installation, I repaired a 1 TB external NTFS hard drive and lost all my datas ! I don't have it on my SD Lion installation and my computer never crashed on it.

Mac OS X Lion Beta Version

I also upgraded my Mac with OX Lion (Beta) to try out the latest version. But very soon I realized that Mac has not running that much smooth it started hanging for a while frequently . The hardware configuration of my Mac is:

* 2.4 Ghz Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor
* RAM: 2 GB
* HD: 500 GB

My question is whether I need to use RAM of more capacity or is it some issues with Lion (beta version)? Should I wait for its release?

I seem to have a similar, if not the same problem with the Lion GM on my brand new MBP 17" (Standard Configuration, 8GB RAM).
That one has an AMD Radeon HD6750M, not NVidia...

In my case, the screen doesn't turn black but simply freezes.
It definitely happens when switching cards.
I've disabled auto switching and had no crash ever since.

Clean install 10.6.8 tested during 8h, no crash. What is strange because the first time I had the problem was under 10.6.7 then it continued under 10.6.8 & 10.7.

Then I did a clean install 10.7, it crashes immediately at the first launch (in particular under the network research screen. Crashed 10 times on 10 on this screen. I even tried to stay several minutes on the others (language choice, keyboard choice) without problems. To pass the crash, I had to click "Continue" quickly to pass the research of wireless networks. Then I restored my Time Machine backup.

For the moment, I'm on the desktop, and never crashed yet. I'm going to try to plug my external monitor soon.

Edit : It crashed on my external monitor 2 hours after. Next step : trying on the monitor Wi-Fi off.

Edit 2 : Also crashed on my internal monitor without AC adapter. I'm running now on my external monitor, Wi-Fi disabled for 2h30, and it didn't crash. I just plugged my ethernet cable, let's see if the problem is related to Wi-Fi. Only time can tell us. I keep you up to date.

Good news : My computer is switched on for 16 hours, Airport disabled, no crash.

I should try to do a clean install of Lion with Airport disabled to see if it crash on the screen where it systematically crashed at the first boot.

I'm very lazy to do that, but I'll do that for you guys.

I had two crashes since I installed GM (the day it came out to developers). First was when I connected a LCD TV 32' to watch a fullscreen quicktime video on it. Second time was while typing while using Adium's chat window.

I have the Macbook Early 2008 (Intel 2.4ghz, GMA X3100, 2GB RAM).

The computer gets unresponsive, the screen goes light blue and asks for the boot password (I use FileVault2). Then the computer boots (faster than a cold boot though).

Luckily I didn't lose any data but it's annoying and something I don't expect coming from Apple. Now I'm thinking about doing a clean install and hoping for a 10.7.1 and above.

Sorry to say that, but miknos I don't think your problem is the same than our.
We are talking about the computer going black randomly (fans always on) and no other way than hard reboot, followed by a kernel panic.

Alright guys, I've done the clean install, without Wi-Fi. I'm plugged in with ethernet and I never crashed. I will try to enable Wi-Fi to see if I crash now.

Edit : I crashed 2 times with Wi-Fi within 30 minutes :) I think that the problem is more likely to produce with the Mac App Store because it is checking internet every time. Now I'm going to try ethernet a few hours again.
I'll try to connect to another Wi-Fi network too, because the one I'm using is opened with no SSID broadcasting. Maybe that's the reason. I'll try this after ethernet.

Edit 2 : Oh no :( I crashed 2 times within 5 minutes on ethernet. I'm desperate :(
