I'm in the market for a 13" MBP and a 27" NEC PA-271 wide gamut monitor.

The only way to connect a large (27" or larger) monitor to a 13" MBA (2011) is through a mini display port to dual link DVI adapter.

Now, when you read reviews on Amazon and Apple.com, you find that for many people this doesn't work.

Why?

What do you do to make it work. I want to know before I buy the large display. What do I have to do to make it work? Or is there a real problem with the adapter?

Supports resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz

That's not possible for resolutions over 1920x1200. You need to use the dual link DVI input on the monitor.

Then you are in luck I would say as NEC sells it's own Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort Cable and it supports resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz. You find it on the nec-webpage for the monitor in question under Accessories.

Below is a document regarding the bad cables that first came out. They were not compliant with the standard and did not work.

Anyway hope it works out for you whatever cable you use.
