Hi all!

On a Macbook Pro 17 i7 2.2 2011 with 8gb of ram and using the Radeon HD6750M i see slow, poor animations/transitions (open/close/Mission Control) on desktop... Does someone observe the same thing?.

Many thx

i have a 2010 mbp 15" HR AG with the i5 and nvidia. full screen apps are horrible for me and animations stutter all over the place. especially on the intel IGP but also on the nvidia 330. mission control isn't smooth either.

thought mine was a pretty recent mbp, but either they want me to upgrade already or they have serious graphics issues in lion.

That's all Lion. Even for .0 release it's quality is pretty poor. I can play a game on a native resolution getting ~60-70 frames per second, but folders animation lags as hell as do basically all other animations. Random slowness of the system is killing me. RAM usage goes up randomly even when computer is not used at all and then suddenly drops to the SL levels.

Very poor quality release in my opinion.

Edit: Whoever is voting people down for saying what they see on their machines should go see a doctor immediatelly. Not cool.

Same thing here. I posted a while back about how turned off I was with the choppy GUI animations using the Intel graphics in SL; the same thing persists with Lion. It is completely beyond me how Apple cannot get their hardware and software on the same level. Clearly their OS must be graphically just as fluid on their lowest level hardware as it is with anything else.

i just don't see why, they should be able to have this run butter smooth even on the IGP. Heck i have a pentium4 with a nv ti 6200 running fedora with kde 4.5 with all animations enabled and it is running like a charm, even that silly cube and those wobbly windows are silky smooth.

how could a i5 with a nv 330 have so much trouble with even scrolling in full screen safari? unlike you though even the intel IGP ran fine in SL. no that i am playing steam games on this machine but the basic stuff ran all right on it.

In DP4 i think that Quarz Extreme works well.... buy in GM not works... waiting for GM 2.0 or 10.7.1??? ;)

The IGP in my 2011 15" MBP (Intel HD 3000) is more than capable of rendering the Lion UI elements at a solid 60 FPS, I'm guessing the stuttering problems are due to immature drivers - especially given the new OpenGL stack in Lion.

Its really disappointing to hear about this. I was planning on upgrading my 2010 i7 mbp the day Lion came out but I wont be doing that if they can't even get it to work right on their own machines.

I thought apple was better than that. I mean, surly they tested it on all different kinds of hardware, not just iMacs. But they somehow feel stuff like that is acceptable?

Leopard was the same at .0 as was snow leopard. It will improve with updates.
The graphics drivers and frameworks are probably just "good enough" for lions release. After they remove major bugs with the .1 update, then they should focus on graphics performance.
All speculation and guesswork by me though. :)

The problem is when you change the graphic card on your MBP with integrated/discreet system. I reinstalled Lion and all works well with The same programs that i used before. But if i change to de HD3000...... Again The same problem.

Solution (for Now)... Use the discreet card.

OS X Lion is the worst OS X version ever concerning GUI smoothness. Leopard and SL did a very good job at release.

Immature drivers, nothing else. Once again, SL is in its most stable and polished
form, Lion is not even out yet. And by the way, everything works really smooth
on my MB pro and i find it very pleasant, fast and stable. I am using it as my main
system since DP 4.

To be fair, 10.0-10.3 were a whole lot worse than Lion at UI responsiveness--even resizing a window would slow everything to a crawl.

I see no lag on my Pro 13" 2010 version. At all.

So I think that it is safe to say it's a matter of drivers, and can (and probably will) be fixed.

Same problem here after official upgrade. I'm on a 15" macbook pro 2010 and most transitions and animations are laggy/choppy, especially mission control, even when discrete graphic card is active. Does anybody experiences similar problems after upgrading?

I'm on a 2008 iMac and the graphics are so choppy I'm thinking about downgrading back to SL. Granted, my machine is a few years old, but it's by no means a slouch and was silky smooth before the upgrade.

same here on a late 2010 mbp!

my poor transitions are between spaces and mission control! it is not terrible but i notice a poor performance compared to my SL

Glad it's not just me. I'm seeing 3-ish fps on my Mac Pro (2008) with dual NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. The wide range of hardware exhibiting this problem is making me rethink my theory that it's my video cards.

The fact that this isn't isolated is encouraging in a way in that the engineering team should take notice and work on a fix. Odd that this never surfaced during the beta, though...

Cheers,
Steve

PS - For the sake of getting the engineers to take this thread seriously, it would be more helpful to avoid hyperbolic "OS X Lion is the worst OS X version ever" posts. Every .0 release has issues. Lion is no different.

Versions

One "slowness" of the new system is the implementation of versions in pages. every time I try it the transition before and after lags or at least doesn't look as good as that of the WWDC. Another thing is the random glitch in the dock where it gets stock in the middle of it's "icon enlargement" animation even without the cursor on.

Hint:
Disable the overlay scrollbars (Preferences/Always show scrollbars).
This give a hugh boost in UI speed. Almost on par with SL.

Your hint worked for me

Great! Thank you very much. Just did it and it was an immediate performance boost. Most annoying animation lags, like showing/hiding mail.app sidebar have gone, and mission control is now as fast as spaces was.
