Change your login screen background in Lion!

I just got a chance to update my script to change the background image of the login window so it works for Lion. Unfortunately to gain Lion support, the new version dropped Snow Leopard support.

https://github.com/Nuckinfuts/Login-Background-Updater

This script will take your currently set desktop background and set that image to the image in the background of the Login window.

Verison 1.2.0 is for Lion

Version 1.1.1 is for Snow Leopard (hit the branch drop down and click "Snow-Leopard")

Lemme know what ya think!

You can do it manually as well, which is fairly easy. I have mine changed, as I'm not a big fan of the SL default.

Go to Macintosh HD (or whatever your primary volume is), System, Library, Core Services, and replace the file DefaultDesktop.jpg with the file of your choosing. Be sure that the file you replace it with has the name DefaultDesktop.jpg as well, and you should find the new image when you log out.

It would be nice if we could change other aspects of the login screen. Examples: change the time format to 24-h time but more importantly add the machine name with the same watermarking used for the screen's apple logo (which would be handy in managing computer labs).

You can change it manually, the file is located here :

/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png

You have to make sure that the image you replace it with is the same dimensions as you screen and resolution of 72 dpi.

System Folder Missing

I typically change my login background, however it requires access to the System folder. Mine does not exist and I cannot seem to unhide it using Terminal. Thoughts/help?

Shift-Command-G, as in the screenshot. Then simply type in the path to whatever folder you want to see.

Does anybody know how to compensate for the login window's gray overlay?

It kills the entire look by literally putting a damper on it =\

There has to be a better way to do this since it also changes the desktop background for apps in full-screen mode. There must be a plist somewhere that points to the login background.
