Lion crashing my MacBook Pro

Hey all,

I have a 2010 17'' Macbook Pro. In the past, I have had the occasional kernel panic, and gotten the message that my computer has to be restarted. I brought this to the apple store many months ago, and they could not diagnose the problem. Since this happened pretty infrequently, I have just dealt with it.

Yesterday, I installed Lion, and since I have installed it, I have had to restart due to a kernel panic about 6 times. I have a feeling I am going to end up back at the apple store today, only for them to tell me all of my hardware is fine, and to just reinstall the operating system. I am positive this won't solve anything. Anyone having similar issues or know of any solutions?

Put a copy of Rember in your Applications folder. Then, boot into single-user mode and run the following:

That will run five iterations of a memory test. If you see any errors, you likely have bad RAM, and this would definitely explain your kernel panics.

After fixing the RAM issue, you'll still have to reinstall the OS for the panics to stop.

Thank you. I have an appointment at the Apple store today, and I will mention this to them. Stupid question...if I change out the RAM, and then re-install the OS, will my hard drive be wiped? All of my important stuff is backed up to an external hard drive but I'm just curious.

Just came back from the Apple store...luckily, my computer crashed right in front of the guy at the genius bar. He determined it is either my logic board or the RAM, but most likely the board. To make a long story short, they will have my Macbook for a few days and having AppleCare saved me $676.50.
