New safari 5.1 won't start under Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Am on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and updated Safari to 5.1 today and it won't start up properly. Have tried now 6 times and safari hangs on the home screen and I have to use force quit.

Any ideas?

I don't you're on 10.8 at this point in time.

I'd suggest deleting and reinstalling. Did you update via software update or did you download from Apple's Safari page?

I DLed straight from Apple's website, and I've had no problems. You might try that; something may have gotten messed up during the Software Update and installation.

Just tried that, makes no difference. It opens, a new page opens then I just get the beach ball.
