I like that Lion lets you dynamically create or remove Spaces, but it'd be way more convenient if there was a keyboard shortcut that could create a new space and take you to it rather than having to start Mission Control and then create a new space by clicking the button. Another shortcut for closing/removing the current space would be nice too. Has anyone found a shortcut like that?

I don't believe there is a way (yet) to do what you ask. The closest thing I can find is the old shortcut fn+F8 which brought up Spaces in 10.6, but in 10.7 it brings up Mission Control.
