up until 10.3, i could play avi in itunes by modifying the "type" tag in the metadata to MooV using filebuddy. That doesn't work anymore in 10.4.

Is there a reason you want to play avis in iTunes? Just install Perian, they released a new version two days ago thats even more compatible with Lion. Or use VLC. iTunes just is not designed at all to handle any non-native filetypes. Certainly not video files.

I had to set iTunes to open in 32-bit mode (get info) in order to play my avi's that I wrapped in .mov.

Hopefully a solution that allows iTunes to run in it's sexy new 64-bitness will be found soon.
