I bought a LaCie 250GB HDD couple weeks with the intention of backing up all my data from my G4 iBook, and 4 old, crappy PCs we intend to get rid of after backing up necessary data.

My question is is it possible to easily back up data from the iBook and PCs ? is there a special procedure like partitioning? The sales guy at the apple store said its possible the first time around but if I reformat the LaCie drive then it only supports Mac OS... or seomthing along those lines? Any advice is much appreciated.

Also is it possible to say, back up data from the PC on a USB memory stick and stick it on the external drive? Two of the 4 PCs don't have USB so getting data out those old guys will be a challenge. Any ideas?

Thanks as always! :)

Use Disk Utility on the Mac to format it to 'MS-DOS' which is FAT32, I think.

As far the old PCs go, you may be able to connect them to the Mac with an ethernet cross-over cable... if they have ethernet that is (surely?).
