but for me its the opposite, had problems with SL but its resolved in Lion

just as a possible thought, is it machines that support AirDrop that are having issues ?

I'm having an issue where sometimes when my computer wakes from sleep, it's not connected, and takes around 2 minutes, where I'm opening the wifi pulldown at the top and choosing my network, and nothing happens, and then suddenly it comes back. Only happened a couple of times.

WiFi access unreliable

I'm having the same problems. And, yes I looked at the Idiot's guide to network troubleshooting. These are solutions I tried back when the problems started. (After the upgrade? to Lion)

Before Lion my system was kept updated and was working seamlessly. (Snow Leopard) Afterwards network access is spotty, after emerging from sleep the system often has to be reset before I get normal access. During the day it seems that the connection is lost periodicly between the Airport base station and the internet. (The internet connection, I still have a good local LAN connection to the Airport)

Modem working fine with full access to the net reported. I'm not using 3rd party hardware or software in my net access. I check for software updates daily because of all the Lion bugs I'm hoping to be fixed. So, this is all Lion from start to finish.

As more proof, peripherals like my iPhone still access the internet via WiFi normally.

If they don't correct these bugs soon I'll just wipe it and return to reliable Snow Leopard.

For me, Lion seems to have actually FIXED the Wifi connection problems that we had on Snow Leopard.

Previously on Snow Leopard the Wifi connection very often failed to reconnect after waking up from sleep or turning Wifi off/on. So far, in Lion it seems to be working much (if not perfectly) better than it did in Snow Leopard.

Altough unlike the problems many Lion users have reported, mine had been a rather obscure and "special" compatibility issue. I received "incorrect password" errors when trying to connect to my 3rd-party (Netgear) router more often than not - depending on the physical distance between the Mac and the router. The previous workaround was to temporarily move the MacBook physically closer to the router, where it connected flawlessly. It definitely wasn't a password issue. Took me hours to figure out and I'm glad Lion seems to have fixed that. Keeping fingers crossed until I hear back from my mom, who uses the MacBook...

DNS Issues

Had problems with SL 10.6.6 on, returning with 10.7. Had to resort to an old fix which has completely cured my wired Internet slowdowns.

I used a patch that someone else came up with that reverts several DNS files to 10.6.5 versions. I have had no problems whatsoever after patching 10.7 the same way.

Problems with lion [10.6.7] internet connection

Poor lion! I blamed it from the beginning. Anyways, it's not the OS folks. It's the router. Although I'm not a tech guy, I will try to explain.

Ok first off you need to log into the router by typing this into the address bar. 192.168.0.1. You are probably thinking that this is not going to work and that I'm an idiot but, first try it.

Ok! now for the good stuff... Somehow change your router wireless setting to 11B/G/N Mixed. Next change the router's channel. Try not to leave it on channel 11. Do not change it to a low channel either. So, leave it in a high end range to a mid end range setting. Next change your router's encryption setting to "WPA2-PSK." DO NOT USE "AUTO WPA2-PSK." Next change the Cipher type to "TKIP AND AES." And, that about does it. Restart your MAC.

Additional notes:

If you are connecting to your router wirelessly and you make a change. the router will kick you off. Log back in to make additional changes until you are done.

Other notes:

Some routers will download new firmware, which is better for OS X Lion [10.6.7]. in the future! Mine did! But, just make the changes in your router's setting that I stated earlier and you should be good to go.

Why is OS X Lion [10.6.7] Slow?

Hello Everyone:

OS X lion [10.6.7] from when you first install it will be slow. Unless your mac is really old or perhaps it is a low end mac then, maybe you shouldn't update it to the newest OS.

For other people, you'll be alright. Anyway, your mac will be slow when you first install OS X lion [10.6.7]. This is because of spotlight, Give it a couple of days to settle in and all should be well.

Is this a fix for wireless or both wired and wireless? I was getting the problem on both when using them independently. I would disable the wireless connection and test the ethernet connection and it would do the same thing. I COULD get to the router setup page, but no "outside" web pages. Should changing the settings listed above solve the problem? It just seems like everyone that posts about this issue, is only experiencing it on wireless or simply dont test a wired connection. Thanks for the post! I hope this does something for me!

Lion/Wifi: maybe have a solution. 16 hrs and it still works.

I am by far not a network specialist. I have been using Macs (exclusively) since they were invented. I have a new, early 2011 13" MBP that came with Lion pre-installed. I updated to 10.7.3. My otherwise screaming home wifi internet connection (my GF's SL 17" is getting solid speed) had slowed to a crawl on my neat new machine.

I trawled forums and tried pretty much everything suggested. I finally found something somewhere that mentioned locations...

As a photojournalist, I have traveled globally for decades and frequently find myself in dodgy network conditions. I have routinely created new locations through the assistant in network preferences when a connection drops for me. This frequently has solved the problem. I'm sure this is bad, but stay with me, because the following may help some people.

I found that I had some hundred or so locations in the network preferences pane's drop down menu. I scrolled to the bottom and clicked on "edit locations". After manually deleting each one of these locations (painful, because there's no way- that I can find- to batch delete), and either eleting or making inactive all of the other services in the network preferences pane (BGAN,ethernet, various USB dongles, etc), I renewed my IP address, and presto! TV-streaming speed is back.

After spending the last 5 years in hell-holes without running water, electricity and any kind of bandwidth to speak of (BGAN is slow and expensive), I finally am enjoying the luxuries of life at home.

This solution seems to have held for at least 16 hours or so, and in my glee I decided to post this to Apple's Discussions Community. Here's the next Apple goof: my apple ID is my email address (Apple recommends this for ease and simplicity), and upon attempting to login, was told that an email address is not a valid Discussions Community username. I'm not able to create a new username, because "this email address is already in use with an Apple ID". I called Apple and they're stumped- the guy said "I honestly don't know what to do, or who to call".

So, if this works for you, and you have an Apple Discussions account, please re-post it.

This whole issue just makes me sad... My sons Mac mini that had lion installed on it when we bought it has always had quirky "network" issues.. Other than network issues my 14 year old has been happy up until now... We just did the latest update a few nights ago and let me tell you, I'm in the dog house with my son... this thing will NO LONGER stay connected to our wireless network.. my son runs his own mine craft server and is very mad that his server has been off line for as long as this has gone on.. I have looked at LOTS of threads that say do this or do that.. I've tried a most of it and every once in a while it will connect for a few hours.. My iMac with SL has ZERO issues and runs great on our LAN.. This is the part that makes me sad...

Steve once said, that "It just works" in one of his key note speeches ... I always loved what Steve had to say and I always loved the simplisity in how he would say things..

all I can say about my sons Mac mini is this.. "It just don't work" ..

My iMac WORKS ! My other sons windows machine WORKS... Out iPhones and iPads work...

I'm not going to change my router config just because Lion and the Mac Mini "Don't Work" I know it can see the network because it can see the wifi SSID and the SSID of other networks.. This is an OS problem and I hope they fix it soon.. My son is very disappointed and this too makes me sad..

My wired connection has gotten worse again after recent Lion updates to my 2011 mini server. It does not even auto-recognize, I have to prompt to join the network every time I wake from sleep. Again...

Mountain Lion

Hi, I upgraded from Leopard through to Mountain Lion. I now only get about 10% bandwidth on both the wired and wifi. Does anybody know a fix for this?
My Macbook Air is now next to useless!

Networking iPhone with Mac computers & using Wifi

This is much easier than you can imagine just follow the instructions bellow:

1. You need to create a new network on your Mac. add password etc...
2. Open sharing (either clicking at airport/wifi item on top of the screen or in system prefs)
3. The "computer name" as it appears in the sharing must be same name as your network name, so if you named your network onion change computer name in sharing to onion!
4. make sure "Internet Sharing" is ticked on.
5. If you are using different modems then make sure your modem name appears on the middle right "under share your connection from". The modem name and options below it are greyed out and to change it you need to un-tick the internet sharing on the left before putting it back on again. And it goes without saying that the wifi needs to be ticked in the window on the right
6. On you iphone select the network you just created, use arrow on the right and input your password (if you haven't already done so)
7. The wifi sign should now appear in your iphone screen replacing the 3G

REMEDIES:
Sometimes iphone won't remember the network or won't connect specially if you have switched modem. In this case in "Sharing" window tick off the internet sharing (window on the left) and tick it back again. It will ask are you sure you want to share and response is start.
- you may have to repeat all the above if you won't connect automatically next time around

I upgraded to 10.8 at release, still had occasional wifi drops, and now finally with 10.8.2 I have not been kicked offline yet. Seems like Apple found my issue, at least. I hope.
