Mail - old Email not showing

Hi
I have noticed that some of my previous emails are not showing in Mail.
Any email previous to Sept 2010 has 'vanished'.

Can mail only store so many messages?
I have not archived any mail, so has the system done it automatically, and if so how do i retrieve?

MacBook Pro
Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
Time machine has not been set-up
