Renaming a folder in Mac OS X is very easy, and there’s a few different ways you can do it.
Rename a file or folder by selecting it and hitting the ‘return’ key – just click on the icon of the file/folder and hit the return key, then type in the new name.
Rename a file or folder by selecting it and clicking on the filename with your cursor – after you have selected the icon, click on the actual filename text and hover for a moment, then you can rename the item.

A few sidenotes to what’s been said above
Since pressing Return allows you to rename the file, you may be wondering how to open the file or folder, since this is what pressing Enter does in Windows. To do that in OS X you need to press Cmd-O or Cmd-down arrow.
The ‘click, then click again’ method of renaming also exists in Windows.
You could also rename a file by right-clicking and choosing Get Info - the filename is given there. (Or instead of right-clicking, selecting the file then clicking on the cog icon in the toolbar and choosing Get Info)

*Or instead of either of those, highlight the file then choose Get Info from the Edit Menu, or highlight then hit Command-I on the keyboard.
Or... well, that's enough options.
