is your external a mac formatted hd? (hfs)
or a windows one? (ntfs)

if its ntfs u need an app to make ntfs work

if its hfs, do you see the hd in "disk utility" app? press repair if u see it. that wont delete your files btw.

good luck

I upgraded to Lion - it slowed my system. saved EVERYTHING on my external HDD. (it recognized my hard drive then)
then did a clean instal of Lion - everything works fine EXCEPT IT WONT RECOGNIZE MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE ANYMORE, even though it did previously, when it was just an UPGRADE.

any help?
