Public Wi-fi and Airport cardz

Does anyone live in a city with public-access wi-fi networks? Know if the Airport cards/Macs are compatible with it? (supposedly a large percentage of Starbucks (bleck..🙄 ) have public wi-fi).

Unfortunately, chicago is very stingy with it's bandwidth. 🙁
