Power Mac G5 sleep issues

Dual 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 (June 2004) running 10.5.8.

Today I was woken by my beloved G5 waking itself from sleep. The time on the computer when it woke up was 7:45AM. Haven't seen that happen before and I get the feeling that computers are not supposed to wake themselves. Put it back to sleep a few minutes later, and all was fine until I woke it myself several hours later to type this up.

Five days ago I reset the PMU to try to fix another intermittent sleep issue. Sometimes I'd put the computer to sleep, but it wouldn't actually go to sleep - the display would turn off as it wouldn't be getting any video signal, but the computer (or fans at least) would stay on and often speed up. Couldn't wake the computer or put it to sleep, holding down the power button to turn it off was the only thing to do. That hasn't happened for at least two weeks though.

A final issue I haven't seen for a month or so was sometimes my known-good display would go blank for a half second or so, and would do this intermittently for a few seconds. This would happen every few days or week or so, but it hasn't happen in probably over a month. I've only had this Mac for about 2.5 months though, but everything else is working fine.

I've got a black Apple keyboard attached to a rear USB port, and basic Logitech mouse attached to the keyboard. I've got a USB hub in my Dell monitor plugged into the other rear USB port, and I've got my Time Machine backup drive connected to that USB hub. I previously had a Core i5 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard connected to this monitor, that was for about 4 months, and I never had any of these issues, so I don't think it's a display or USB hub in display issue.

Just checked Energy Saver and I don't have anything like that set, I didn't have the "start after power failure" box checked either. I did have the "wake on modem ring" and "wake on Ethernet network access" boxes checked (despite using Airport Extreme), but now I've unchecked them. It's only happen once, I guess I'll just sit tight and see what happens...

My work Mac is a 1.8Ghz G5 (late 2004). There was a sleep issue with this Mac. Anytime I allowed it to sleep and then woke it up, it always crashed. At some point this really irritated me so I set the processor to maximum, altered the Energy Settings to never let the Mac sleep and only engaged the screensaver.

It's been on continuously for the last 6.5 years (my boss got it in Feb. 2005) and never sleeps.

However, I think sometime in 2006 Apple addressed this issue. I remember a firmware update to fix the sleep issue (it was specific to this G5 model, because it was the only one with this problem). I applied it, but I never altered the sleep settings.

I'm just wondering if your model is the same and thus this firmware update would apply to you.

This is what I would have applied at the time (through Software Update)

I did a Google search for this since I have completely forgotten details about it and I found this: http://xlr8yourmac.com/G5/powermac_g5_docs_updates.html#firmware

The recommended workaround at the time (before applying this firmware update) was as I had done - not letting the Mac sleep at all.

No idea if this will help you or not.

Radeon Cards can sometimes cause G5 problems....(reposted)

If you have this card, (Many DualG5s Do)

display + sleep issue attributed to Radeon video cards.And I quote::

""There is a missing extension in System/Library/Extensions/AppleNDRV(folder).

For those who have Ati Radeon 9600 PC and Mac Edition, ATI ROM Xtender is missing in Leopard causing sleep and display problems. The AppleNDVR folder contain only two extensions (AtiDriver.bundle and ATIRuntimeDriver.bundle). You need ATI ROM Xtender from Tiger(or ATI Displays preference pane reloaded onto 10.5) to have a correct display. Just put it in the folder and restart.""

OK, I think I solved the problem.

Before I went to bed last night, I disconnected the USB hard drive from my monitor and put the computer to sleep. Couldn't seep because of the bright light on the hard drive, so I got up and ripped the power cable out of the back of the hard drive. A second later, the computer woke up.

Looks like it could be being woken up by fluctuations in the power. Both the computer and the hard drive are on the same power board.

looking for trash files
unplug EVERYTHING usb from the computer, put it to sleep, bet it won't happen again.

start plugging in 1 thing at a time (1 per day/night/test), sleep and test.

something usb is waking the computer. have seen this over and over.

on the really odd chance that this didn't help, you might also try making a new account, logging out of your current account and into the new account and test again. i've had a borked plist or 3 that would cause something like this. best of luck.
