I'm considering upgrading to a SSD drive as well. Mines a mid 2010 so it should work pretty well.

Still not sure if it's worth investing in a SSD for my late 2008. Upgraded to 7200rpm 500gb recently with 8gb ram and it's good enough. Spent a little over $100 for everything. Boottime cut in half and everything running as fast as ever. Compared to a SSD there's probably a 3-5 second difference and $300-500 doesn't justify that.
It's more than 3-5 seconds difference, and aside from that, you can either use optibay (put an ssd for the OS+apps and your other HDD in the dvd slot, if you don't need it).
OR you could use the ssd only, and convert your 500gb hdd to an external for storage.

I paid £77 which is about $110 but it was only a 128gb, you could install a small SSD in optical drive for programs and OS.
I recently upgraded my 2010 13" macbook pro with a Corair force 3 SSD. That thing gives me boot times of around 18 seconds. I don't even get a Windmill at the bootup screen 
. This Sata 3 drive is running on the Sata 2 interface of my Mac. I opted for a Sata 3 SSD because of improved random access speeds.
Please note: All Sata 3 SSDs will run at around 260/215 read/write on a Sata 2 interface. But what counts with an SSD isn't really the sequentials, but more the IOPS.

I upgraded my mid-2009 Aluminum Macbook from a 120GB standard drive to a 500GB Seagate Momentus Hybrid ($114 at OWC). My boot times went from 47 seconds to about 17 seconds. Most of my common apps work much faster as well, but it has the added advantages of more storage and lower cost (per MB).

As for the Seagate Hybrid XT, I've had that drive, and it started feeling quite sluggish in the end. Maybe it was just my drive though.

I put a Kingston 80GB SSD in my 2006 Blackbook, gave it a whole new lease on life to such an extent that i'm genuinely pissed I can't run Lion or VMWare 4 on it (CoreDuo not supported by either). While the performance improvement is worth it alone, the other big reason to go with SSD over a regular drive is the SSD has no moving parts.
As someone that fixes laptop as a part of his job, I see failed hard drives every week from people that man-handle their laptops completely failing to realize there are disks spinning at 5400-7200RPMs inside.

Very impressive indeed. I also just upgraded my mid 2007 MacBook with a 120GB SSD.
Could you please use XBench to benchmark your SSD and post the results here? Thing is, that I only get ~1GBit/sec read speed and I'm wondering why it doesn't do more (the controller links @ 1,5GBit/sec).

1.5 gbit/sec is the theoretical limit of the Sata 1 interface. I also have a Sata II SSD installed in a 2006 64bit macbook pro and I get about 125 mb/sec reads and writes.

Just installed a seagate momentus xt hybrid hard drive. (4 gb ssd/500gb disk 7200)
Not close to full ssd speeds but my macbook does boot up pretty fast now. Including the thousands of fonts I have installed plus photoshop/illustrator it boots up under 50 seconds.

I just did one on my semi-stock Macbook mid 2010. It seems LOW compared to these. (I do have 4Gigs of RAM though.) I'm going to save that test until I get the Momentus XT drive. I can't get the SSD right now. I might later. (Currently looking for a matching one for my wife, I'll give her that drive and I'll upgrade to SSD then.)
