iMovie '11 picture in picture

I am having an issue when i drag a picture into imovie '11 for a picture in picture. When it lays over the movie it just comes up as a black box. This happens with jpeg and png files. Is anyone else having these problems?

I should mention that this also happens if i do a side by side picture drop.

You import pictures straight into a Project. No need to import into Events.

Thanks Dave, one learns every day. I wish somebody would print a list of all these tips. Lucky to have a forum.
