Question about iCloud, Lion, and iOS5

I am a fairly new Mac user. I have a new white Macbook. I have been using Hotmail since the Stone Age and I am anxious to sign up for iCloud and get a "@me.com" email address. What is the difference between Lion and iOS5? I have been told that I must upgrade to Lion before i can sign up for iCloud (that is, when they launch it). Thanks!

Yes, you will need Lion 10.7.2 or iOS5 to sign up but you will be able to use other OS's with the service.
