I just got an email and text today it says "High Data Usage Alert" I made it with 10 days left on my billing cycle. My total for this month so far is 11.3 GB. Anybody else make it to the 5% club?

Well since I've started streaming some tv shows from Hulu here and there, I've started using between 3 and 4 gb, but I don't know if that puts me in the top 5-10%.

What do you do that consumes so much data?

I didn't get any notices, but I'm definitely up there with you.

Verizon shows my current usage at 9.8GB with 13 days left in my cycle this month.

I stream SiriusXM radio at work from 8:30 - 4:30 and that continues in the car home until 5:30, then again from about 7 - 10pm although that's on WiFi so nevermind.

All this and daily app updates, Netflix, Hulu, and porn other fine viewing makes for hefty data usage.

Obviously the bulk of it is SiriusXM. I love me some Ron & Fez. :)

What provider are you using? I thought AT&T and Verizon weren't going to alert/throttle until next month.

What do you do to use so much data?
Serious question

I'm with AT&T ever sine the release of the iphone 3g. I watch my TV from home using slingbox(I think that takes up most of my data). I also watch netflix, youtube and HBOgo on the iphone. And I listen to espn radio and Iheartradio as well.

My work is very relaxed and they don't care if I'm watching TV while I do my work as long as it gets done. That's why I'm up to 11GB of data.

But my work is merging with another company in the next few months and that relaxed atmosphere will be no more, so i expect my data usage to go down to about 2GB.

Hmm, so "high data usage" is 10GB+ for AT&T? And here I was fretting over using 4GB. ;)

Does anyone know if the AT&T throttling will be for the top 5% (which it's looking like to be 10GB+ people), or for 2GB and above?

According to AT&T's own numbers, the top 5% should be anyone who uses over 1.5GB.

That can't be possible... Hmmm

From AT&T's site:
DataPro for Enterprise – 2 GB of data for $40 per month.
Makes an ideal choice if you use 2 GB or less per month—just like 98 percent of current AT&T smartphone customers.

According to AT&T, only 2% use more than 2GB. They're throttling the top 5%. That tells me that if you use more than 1.5GB or so, expect to have your speeds lowered.

I think you're misunderstanding what ATT is doing. I think the Throttling of data only pertains to those still on Unlimited plans.

Then again, that's just my understanding.

I used up 13.2GB a few months ago. Streaming Google Music Beta on my Droid from basically 6am-5pm, plus a couple podcasts, or live audio on MLB at Bat. No video, no tethering, no wi-fi at work (streaming services are firewalled) just straight VZW 3G.

The problem with Google Music is that it downloads the entire uncompressed song to play. I switched to Pandora last month and basically dropped Google Music, and with my podcasts, MLB games, I was just over 3GB for the month. Still in the top 5% according to Verizon.

I'm still grandfathered in with AT&T unlimited too since I got my 3GS on launch day back in June 09.

This whole throttling thing has me concerned too, ever since AT&T must've added a new tower in my area - Grand Rapids, MI - back in the spring I've been getting full 3G bars at home, whereas up until then I really didn't get a 3G signal at home. However I've got WiFi at home all day and night, so it didn't matter. But not I find myself using 3G a lot more now, especially if I'm downloading and/or streaming content from my laptop or my PS 3 over WiFi. Or sometimes, after getting home from work, I simply forget to turn 3G off and turn WiFi back on. I used to keep 3G off at home, since I have WiFi, and then turn 3G on whenever I leave the house.

Whereas I used to trend around 1.5GB of data use per month, over the past year, I have been trending 4-4.5GB per month, over the last few months. I honestly can't see myself going over 5GB per month however, so I'm HOPING to not fall into that top 5%.

Although, seeing the usage amounts that others have posted in this very thread, of people who have used over 10GB of data per month, and knowing that I haven't even made half of that amount, makes me feel a bit better about things for myself.

The users of this (and various other tech websites) represent a small number of overall customers and are typically not standard users.

Once again, I stress that (according to AT&T's own numbers) only 2% of their data users exceed 2GB. When they begin throttling the top 5% of 'unlimited' plan users, expect that slow down to happen between 1-1.5GB of use... not around 5GB.

Why don't people use WiFi when at work and home instead of 3G?

Work, the company may not let you put your personal device on their network, at home I don't know unless they don't have fast internet at home so it doesn't make a difference.
