Back in the Newton days, there was a feature called Assistant. You could write in commands in common English and Newton would help you complete that task.

"The Newton Assistant is the intuitive part of Newton. You may ask it to do things for you using various key request words. These words may or may not be capitalized, and each has several acceptable synonyms."

This is quoted from Apple's Support page, which I'm surprised they still have up! There is a typo, too! "Newton MessagePad: Using the Newton Assistan"

There's a ton of info on Newton Assistant. What is so interesting, is that Apple is rumored to evolve this Assistant concept, with voice, as you all know, with the next iPhone, on the 4th. I'd love to see the evolution of Newton in this product, it seems there is a similar end goal shared between the two Assistants. I am very eager to see what Apple has been working on.
