Hi - have decided to wait until the major MBP redesign next year before buying a new MBP. In the meantime am thinking of replacing the 200Gb 7200rpm HDD in my early (non-uniody) 2008 15" Macbook Pro (2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM) with a 256Gb SSD.

I'd like to get the 256Gb Crucial M4 SSD if it'll work with my MBP, even though my MBP's SATA interface is only 1.5Gb/s, as have an opportunity to get this quite cheap (less than £260) at the moment. Will it work, though? I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.1 Lion

I definitely need 256Gb (or thereabouts) space, as am running Windows 7 under bootcamp as well as OS X and even under OS X have lots of apps etc.

Alternatively, are there any good, reliable SATA II SSDs that will work that would be much cheaper for the same capacity? Thanks

It's supposed to be abled to downgrade itself as the SATA link is backwards compatible. You shouldn't have problems.

Worst comes to worst, you can always return it.

FWIW: Even though everyone is flinging redesign like it's going out of style, I personally think it isn't coming anytime soon.

Okay, have now placed an order for the Crucial M4 256Gb SSD (the seller does accept returns BTW)

Have also ordered a cheap (around £20) Startech FW400 external enclosure for my old 200Gb HDD, and also another 4GB of DDR2 667Ghz RAM, as apparently my model can (unofficially) support up to 6Gb (1x2Gb, 1x4Gb) RAM. Again if it doesn't work, can return it. The extra RAM will be be useful for running Virtual Machines etc. Might also even get a few quid back for the left-over 2Gb module.

Me neither, but hopefully these upgrades will breathe a bit of new life into my old MBP in the meantime.

Hey oxfordguy, I am in a similar situation at the moment, so did the SATA 3 SSD work for you?

Hi - yes I have a SATA III 256Gb Crucial M4 SSD installed in the main drive bay, it works absolutely fine - its obviously is limited a little by the 1.5Gb/sec SATA I interface, but seems blisteringly fast compared to the 7200rpm HDD I had before!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to know whether the below drive will work in my 2007 non unibody macbook pro and if I would need casing for this drive?

Corsair Force 3 240 GB SATA 3 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive
Crucial 256 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s
