iMessage & FaceTime Settings?

In settings, iMessage has a "Receive At" option. My currently has my phone number AND my gmail address.

FaceTime (under settings) has both my phone number and an email address (gmail).

1. Why the email address in iMessage? What purpose does it serve, etc.?
2. When trying to add my new @me.com address to iMessage, I get an error saying it is already in use. What's that mean?
3. When trying to add my new @me.com address to FaceTime, I get an error saying it is already in use. Again, what's up with that?

Thanks for any and all guidance in advance.

Cosmo

The email addresses in iMessage and FaceTime are just another way for people to contact you using those services. For example, on my iPad, I couldn't iMessage to your phone number, but I could iMessage to your email address. Same with FaceTime, I could FaceTime from my Mac to your iPhone using your email address.

The problem with the "already in use" message is plaguing a lot of people, including myself.

It's because your @me address is already listed as a verified contact address under another Apple ID (probably the Apple ID named with your gmail account).

To verify this, go to appleid.apple.com and log in with your gmail apple id, and see if it shows your MobileMe email address as a verified contact address, if so, you won't be able to use that address as a method of contact under iMessage or FaceTime, unless you log into those services as your gmail apple ID.

I know, it's so frickin' confusing......Like I've said in other threads, Apple has a big mess on their hands. I hope they get this all worked out soon....

I made the mistake of trying to remove the @me.com address from MY old iTunes Apple ID and it appeared to be removed, but even still, iMessage says it's in use. And now I can't even add it back to the way it was before, so I could use my old Apple ID with iMessage, same "in use" error. So now my main email account, @me.com, isn't usable for iMessage or FaceTime at all.

Apple has a big mess on their hands......

Well, that is just plain stupid! I have to have a 3rd party email address to use iMessage and FaceTime? I should be able to use my new @me.com email address.

Anyway to fix this?

My AppleID manage website has the @me.com as a sub address, but it won't let me verify it because it is says it's belongs to another AppleID (which is mine!!!)
