Anyone else got this?

If it were any other app I'd delete it and reinstall but you can't really do that with safari.

Sometimes it's fine, other times it will crash out several times, usually as I'm typing something like this. It usually waits until I've almost finished and then Pulls the plug, losing everything I've written in the process. It's somewhat irritating...

Any suggestions?

You may have too many apps open at one time. Try going to the home screen and double clicking the home button to bring up the multi-tasking bar. Hold on one app icon until the icons start to jiggle and touch the red circle with the minus sign to close each one. After closing all of the apps shut off the iPad and restart.

Just tried it and nope, still does it....

Thanks for the suggestion though!

I have it too and it is driving me crazy. Never more than 10 mins without a crash on iPod touch 4th gen (current prior to announcement of white touch).

Safari Fail

I updated to iOS 5 last night, installed an app tap-translate today which apparently integrates into Safari, and now Safari immediately closes whenever i try to open it.. Totalled..

i have the same problem. iPad 1 upgraded to iOS5. everytime i open Safari and hit some websites it will crash out. Safari is the only app that crashes.

i wish Apple would fix this!

Today Safari started to crash on me also. It had worked perfectly for over 4 weeks thru both iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1. After trying the most obvious things I decided to go to Bookmarks and clear History and Safari stopped crashing.

Really aggravating when you are in the middle of filling out a web based form and it crashes.

Well, now I can see I'm not alone..
I have been suffering from constant safari crashes. (I think) they started when I updated to iOS5 BUT, I still had the odd one with iOS4..
I took it to the Apple store, the genius reset the iPad and then took back up from the cloud, took it home, a week later I was back at the store where this time the genius did a "super" reset (?). Then I installed some apps (certainly not all of them, I took the opportunity to use this as a clean up)...
Two weeks later I'm back at the apple store and seeing that the problem wasn't going away they exchanged my iPad for another one (still iPad 1).
That would've been great but today I've been using it and safari crashed three times already.... So I have a new iPad and I'm no further forward.
Has anybody got a solution to the problem yet?

And here I thought I would have to search to find an "iOS 5 is crashing my ipad all the damn time thread"

I'm REALLY getting tired of this. It happens multiple times per day on my 1st gen 32 Wi-Fi.

If this is some ploy to make us by IP2 Its not working...

I have the exact same iPad and even a brand new one didn't fix it. It is definitely an issue with iOS5. All I can do now is wait for iPad 3 :0P

Same thing here (I-Pad 1, 32g Wi-Fi)

Safari on my original iPad worked perfectly for over 4 weeks thru 5.0 and 5.0.1. Then suddenly it started crashing. After trying several things, I tried going to Safari Bookmarks>History>Clear History. After doing this, Safari stopped crashing. Worked for me, may work for you. Suggest you close Safari afterwards and do a restart. I'm not sure if this worked because I had too much history or if there was corruption, but after clearing the history it has not crashed again.

iPad 1 had a definite issue with ios 5 and Safari crashing. I had to restore as new and that solved. But the occasional crash happened every now and then.

My iPad 2 has no issues whatsoever. So this leads me to believe that the hardware and software don't mesh iOS 5 and iPad 1.

I would agree with doing this but I have had my iPad replaced at the Apple store with a brand new one (no browsing history, etc) and still constantly crashes.

iPad 2 Crashing Often with iOS 5.0.1

I have a 64gb wi/fi only iPad 2 that never once crashed with iOS4.x. Since upgrading to iOS5 it has experienced frequent crash/reboot issues. The iOS 5.0.1 update seemed to help a bit (but it may be that I am getting used to crashing and rebooting).

  • I have tried the reset and restore process several times, it seems to crash less for a day or two
  • I have tried with all of the iCloud crap on and with it off (it seems to crash less when it is off, but it may be my perception).
  • I have tried with no user selected multi-taskint (i.e. running only one app at a time), it still crashes in Safari, Mail, and other apps. There is no change in the crashing frequency.
  • I have tried with wi/fi off with no apparent change in the frequency of crashing.
Other issues are that my battery seems to drain faster and it occasionally drops a strong wi/fi signal.

Anything else I can try short of using a different tablet?

Clear history several times per day. I'm sure Apple will correct this in a future update but it works until then.

Same here. 32GB iPad 1 - Safari constantly crashes on me, I hope they'll release a fix for this soon! Starting to get annoyed, I've tried everything, no dice.

I had the same issue on my ipad2. I tried all the same things: clearing data, history, cookies, rebooting, restoring, closing all apps in the multitask bar, etc. Nothing helped. I had not had the issue until recently (after the last update). Checking the diagnogists I saw a lot of low memory crashes.

I finally found a thread on this forum from last year with some suggestions on optimizing memory on the ipad1. One suggestion was to turn off Spotlight search helpers. I don't use Spotlight so I turned all of them off. That was a couple of weeks ago and so for (knock on wood) no crashes since.

You might give it a try and see if it works for you. Settings>Spotlight Search
