Unhappy Macbook pro screen glitch :S

When I opened my mac this afternoon, the screen looked like this:

Then, after I managed to close all the windows (yes there actually were a bazillion overlapping frozen windows for some reason) it looked like this:

the top bar kept disappearing and reappearing in segments. Restarted and it's better now, but yesterday the top bar was malfunctioning (alone) as well, parts of it were dis/re-appearing, the battery display was stuck at 100%, the date and time were from the last time I opened the laptop (around 2 days before) and I restarted it yesterday too. It seems like the problem recurred and worse than before. Anyone able to shed some light on this?

I got my macbook pro a little over a year and a half ago, april 2010.
