I always like to clear all the apps from the bar.. but does keeping them use more battery?

thanks

Generally it doesn't. Apps that run in the background when they are closed such as Pandora and GPS navigation will.

I do notice that having a lot of apps open on my iPhone slow it down so I generally clear them out at the end of the day. But my battery has been fine.

Yes it does and it also depends on what kind of apps are they. The more you keep the more the battery drain you will experience. They do not close completely but just stored in memory and return to the state u left them once u open them again.
