Reinstall?

I can't get Disk Utility to run. (Error code 1000) Do I have to reinstall the whole OS or is there a way to just freshen up the Disk Utility? If I have to reinstall, what is the safest and best way?

Have you tried booting from your OSX CD then running the Disk Utility from there?

I have never booted from an install CD. What is the procedure?

Boot into X, put your OSX CD in the drive then reboot holding down the 'c' key.
