iPhone 4 wifi not seeing networks

My daughters iphone 4 has had serious issue with detecting wifi networks for as long as I can remember. When the phone is near the router it can see and connect to the network but then drops out right away when you move it about 20 feet away, even in the same same room.
Tried other router with no success as well as resetting the network settings.
Wondering if this is a common problem. I am thinking of contacting apple before the applecare runs out.

You probably want to try to restore it as well.

Seen this kind of glitch in past and get it done by restore.

Don't forget to backup first!

Do any other smartphones, or wifi capable devices experience dropouts? You may be encountering wireless interference from a number of possible sources, from a microwave, RF signal leakage from cable or satellite service, cordless phones using the 2.4 or 5.0 Ghz frequency, also sometimes your neighbors' wireless networks. It could also be the building materials causing the wireless signal to drop. See this support article for more information.

thanks for the suggestions...

We have several ipods that see the network ok and everything else wireless seems to work fine... only the iphone. Also when in free wifi areas the ipods connect ok but the iphone dosen't see the network.

Tried a restore with no change as well as resting the network preferences.

Changed the airport extreme frequency that supplies the wifi to 5 from 2.4 with no change. iphone still drops the network as soon as the phone is moved about 15 feet from the router.

Well, it's time to contact AppleCare or a retail store then to get the iPhone replaced. If it happens with multiple networks, and you did the reset of network settings and a restore/setup as new, the conclusion is hardware fault.
