Lion’s TextEdit and Preview apps painfully slow

I upgraded to Lion and am now running 10.7.2 on an "Early 2011" 15" MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM.

One of the continuing annoyances I find is the launch speed of both TextEdit and Preview. TextEdit will sometimes take around 10 seconds from launch to actually coming up. Preview often does the same thing, or it seems to load, but then automatically quits.

Are there any pref files or hidden caches that I can purge to get the two mini-apps to behave normally?

I have noticed that myself.
Preview is very slow when opening.
I'm using an early 13" MBP with 8 Gig of RAM.

Yeah, I really don't get it—launching these tiny apps should be almost instantaneous, especially with a new MacBook Pro running the latest OS.
It's not like I'm launching Photoshop or some huge FPS!
(This—and the fact that it wasn't fixed in 10.7.1 or 10.7.2—is what makes me think I must have some hosed prefs somewhere that's causing it)

Go to System Preferences>General>“Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps” remove the check mark.

It worked.

I might not have thought of that - especially with network attached drives - but why oh why does it take so freaking long when there were NO windows open when I closed the app?

I thought it might just be limited RAM - will be nice when the RAM I ordered shows up - but that would have been disappointing to sees these basic apps still crawling.

or maybe someone could find an item in the plist or terminal command to set that option on an app specific basis.

the really odd thing is that for me it is slow on Mac OS X Lion Server and my newest MacBook Pro 15" but not so on my MacBook Pro 17"

I bought a new iMac about a month ago (i7, SSD, 12 gigs of RAM) and would have to wait around 45 seconds for TextEdit to open, this under 10.7.2 Lion. I did some research and removed the “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps” check mark, but that didn't fix anything. It wasn't until I upgraded to 10.7.3 that the problem went away. It now opens in a second or so.

Preview is agonisingly slow for what used to be a quick look program. It was slow on Lion (most uptodate version) and now in Mountain Lion too. It's the same on all of my macs (see signature). “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps” is unchecked. I thought it was just me as many of my usual programs are slow nowadays, especially MS Office 2011 and Aperture.

Hi, it's the 256GB version that Apple ships, with 227GB free. (All of my documents, music, etc. reside on a 1TB HDD with 648GB free.)

Well, I ended up just re-verting back to Snow Leopard back in December
(the process of which took forever and required wiping my drive, doing a complete factory re-install, then dragging all of my non-system folders over—and it still wound up messing up my iCal and Address Book files, oh well).

I know I'll eventually have to start using Lion (or Mountain Lion), but right now I find Snow Leopard a much more user-friendly environment.

I had the same problem.
It began when i installed 10.7.1 actualization.
There is no official information from apple about this issue.
It did not improve when i installed 10.7.2 - 10.7.4.
It did not improve with the <<Go to System Preferences>General>“Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps” remove the check mark >> solution.

Solution? i downgrade to 10.7 and it worked fantastic. Now preview and also text edit are as fast as it used to be in the beginning. It is definitely a 10.7.1 problem

How to downgrade? i download Lion 10.7 DMG and made a bootable DVD. Then i reinstalled lion 10.7. I DID NOT NEED TO DELETE ANY OF MY PERSONAL FILES. It´s not necessary to make a clean install.

Why this happens? It still a question without an answer from apple.

I had the same problems with the lag when opening docs in Preview. I found a solution to my problem when I went thru the Preview preferences and found the Bookmarks tab had references to my old iDisk.

Now that iDisk is not available the App was stalling as it tried to link to them.
I deleted the bookmarks and the Preview App is now functioning well and with out the beach balling delays.

Hope this works for someone else.
