iMessage: Dots that appear?

Sometimes I notice three dots that appear when using imessage? What do these dots mean?

It means the other party is replying.

I thought that might be it. So do the dots display as long as the other person is typing? If they stop typing do the dots go away? Thanks.

The dots will disappear if the other person stops typing.
