Intel Chip: 1,000,000,000,000 calculations per second.

Intel has created a chip that can perform 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) calculations per second. In 1996, to perform the same amount of calculations, it took 72 cabinets of servers to achieve the same feat. Human ingenuity at its finest!

Sorry if this has been posted already. I did a quick search of the forums via the search bar and I got no hits... If a thread has already been made about this, then go ahead and delete this post.

Impressive. When do you suppose it'll be mainstream enough to feature in Macs?

1000's of parallel processors? My understanding is that the Ghz speed of current technology chips caps out around 3Ghz due to heat, and the only way to increase this is by adding parallel processing. (I did not read the link.)

While I don't claim to fully understand it - isn't this an example of Moore's Law. If so, wouldn't Moore's Law predict that in 11/2 or 2 years that number should go to 2 trillion calculations per second?!

It will probably be used in a G5 Apple Macintosh.
