Imessages sometimes sent as Text Messages ??

Let's say you are imessaging someone and all of a sudden my messages sends as regular texts. Can it also mean the other person is talking on the phone? (He has verizon and so do I). Also, I'm wondering if the person is still on the phone (or doesn't have data connection), will it let you know that you are unable to send imessages before even sending anything? I noticed that for awhile, it said "Text message" in the inbox and the "send" button was green instead of blue. Usually, it will say imessage and the send button will be blue. What does this mean? Thank you.

Messages starting as iMessage and failing over to SMS happen when either:
1) You have no data connection;
2) The recipient has no data connection;
3) iMessage servers are unavailable somehow.

You can tell iMessage to not fail over to SMS in Settings > Messages > Send As SMS = OFF. This will make iMessage contacts only send out via iMessage and never fail over to SMS while still keeping SMS contacts as SMS.

And yes: blue means iMessage as far as the phone knows at the time that you composed the message. But sometimes things can fail halfway through the process

A data connection is unavalible on either device!

I hadn't thought of this. Would be interesting to experiment though. See if you can arrange this with your friend:

First you text each other while you are both just texting, and neither person is on the phone or internet or anything. Then one of you try texting while the other one of you is on the phone.

I'm going to give this a shot myself, while we're both on wifi. One on AT&T and one on Verizon.
