I remember watching something on TV that there was a way to have OS X show what it was doing or launching just like when you load linux on a pc.
 
i know you can check what items startup on launch in the accounts pane of System Preferences.....

if thats not what you are looking for perhaps a search at www.osxhints.com will give you some good results
