is the apple tv2 able to play files from an external hard drive on a time capsule?

Just want to check this out, my media player just died and i want to know my options might i buy an atv2.

No, it is not able to play anything from a network connected hard drive without having a computer/iOS device streaming to it.
 
so i will always need a mac in between ? is there any particular reason why? i don't see the need of a mac being active to play a video from the tc? video files don't need to be converted anymore right?
