Apple today released a software update for the second-generation Apple TV, bringing the set-top box to version 4.4.4. The update arrives as Build 9A406a, but it is not yet clear what improvements are included in the release.

Apple TV software 4.4.3 was released last month and added support for Netflix streaming in Mexico and an audio output issue when the connected television set is turned off.

Curiously, Apple also appears to have released a slightly tweaked version of iOS 5.0.1 for the iPhone 4S [Direct Link]. The new version arrives as Build 9A406, an increment of one over the original release of iOS 5.0.1 last month.

The tweaked version of iOS 5.0.1 does not appear to be being offered to users currently running the original version of the software, but would be downloaded by any users upgrading to iOS 5.0.1 from this point on. Consequently, any change appears to be a minor one that Apple would like to pass along to users and can easily do so for new iOS 5.0.1 users with the tweaked update, but for which an entirely separate iOS 5.0.2 release is not warranted. The company is presumably bundling the changes into the forthcoming iOS 5.1 update that is currently in developer testing, and at that point all users would receive it as part of the larger update.

One possibility is that the tweaked update contains minor changes needed for the next round of international launches occurring tomorrow. iPhones sold in those countries may come with only iOS 5.0 installed, and users immediately updating to iOS 5.0.1 in those countries would receive the tweaked version updated for their markets.

Update: Apple has updated its Apple TV software release notes to report that the 4.4.4 update is a bug fix update that does not appear to bring any new features or compatibility.
Stability and performance: Apple TV software version 4.4.4 includes general performance and stability improvements, including a fix for an issue that displayed an error when playing some video content.

God bless you, tinkerers. You do stuff so that the rest of us don't have to.

I've been afraid to install 5.01. 5.01 addressed some users issue with battery life. Since my 4s has not been plagued by this issue, and I read of at least 1 person having battery issues after the update (although it seems like everyone else was in fact seeing an improvement) I decided to leave well enough alone. :) My only requirement is my phone lasts from the moment I take it off the charger on the way to work to just before bed when I plug it in. Right now I'm plugging it in with about 35-45% of the battery remaining so I'll stick with 5.0. :)

Thank you to all early adopters and beta testers of anything.

Wouldn't update without you:)

I'd love to hear about hear if the new 5.01 helps with battery life on 4S models that had battery that got worse when going from 5.0 to 5.01.

I assume if you're already running 5.01 that doing a restore would install the newest version?

I hope they fixed the problem with the AppleTV displaying the Album artwork for the previously played song instead of the current song. Not a huge bug, obviously, but annoying none-the-less.

Splintering the OS can't be a good idea. I hope the changes they made in this special build will be included in future updates for all users.

netflix

I hope there are bug fixes for Netflix. There have been a few issues for some (self included) that keeps users from logging onto Netflix after watching Mad Men. Bizarrely specific, but it's out there and very frustrating.

It's been out for 3 or 4 days. Since they released the new iPhone updates.

Aren't all 4.4+ boxes already on iOS 5? You simply press the select button on the remote to switch from the Apple TV Software version (4.4) to the version of iOS the box is running (that screen).

Can someone confirm if the Apple TV update fixes the issue with some Netflix shows being 'unavailable' (ex. Backyardigans). I had to revert to older software because of this.

If I do that the O/S build is 5.1

But still my point stands.

If the current version says 4.4.4 and O/S 5.0 and the seed version says 5.0 O/S 5.1 there's still some major changes somewhere.

It's not just a point update.

gist of front page story: apple releases software update but we dont know what it does so we'll just speculate for really no good reason at all

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I'll skip this one.

Browse Album/Artist feature

Probably a newb  post. Anyway, clearly I had missed this feature until just now after the update. I just discovered that by holding down the 'select' button, I can browse an artist or album while a song is playing. Was this there before 4.4.4?

This was fixed on the last iTunes update last week.
